Meet the quality control department.

He is a rubber duck. He has no formal training. He does, however, make an extremely satisfying noise, and he is the reason this page has the name it does.

The real work is duller: reading spec sheets, asking suppliers awkward questions, and saying no to about half of what we are offered.

The eight points

Every toy on this site has been through all eight. Plenty of toys we were offered did not make it past point two.

1

Seams are stitched, not glued

Glued seams are the first thing to go. We look for double-stitched or bar-tacked seams on anything soft, because a seam that opens on day three turns a toy into a stuffing problem.

2

Nothing small comes off

Plastic eyes, glued-on noses, bells that work loose, decorative buttons. If a part can be chewed free and swallowed, the toy doesn't go on the site.

3

The squeaker sits deep

A squeaker rattling around loose behind a thin layer of fabric is a choking risk. We want it seated in a chamber, inside the body, behind more than one layer.

4

Materials are declared

We ask every supplier what the toy is actually made of and for the test reports behind any safety claim. If they can't or won't tell us, we don't list it.

5

It comes in the right size

Most toy injuries are sizing problems, not manufacturing ones. A toy that suits a spaniel can be a hazard for a mastiff, so every listing states the size it's meant for.

6

The noise is worth it

A squeak that dies after ten minutes is a toy that gets abandoned. We favour toys where the noise mechanism is protected rather than exposed.

7

Reviews are read, all of them

Not the five-star ones. We read the one and two-star reviews across every listing we can find for a product, looking for the same complaint appearing more than once.

8

It survives its own category

A toy sold as a power chew has to behave like one. If the honest answer is 'this is a gentle chewer's toy', we list it as one, and price it like one.

What we turn down

The list of things we say no to is longer than the catalogue. Here is the short version.

  • Toys with glued-on eyes, noses or decorative parts.
  • Anything with a loose bell or rattle that a determined dog could free.
  • Soft toys with single-stitched seams.
  • Products where the supplier won't tell us what the materials are.
  • Anything marketed as “indestructible”, because nothing is.
  • Toys sized for one animal and sold as suitable for all of them.

Being straight with you about what we are

VGM Happy Pets is an online shop. We do not manufacture toys and we do not run a testing laboratory. We source from established pet-toy suppliers and manufacturers, and our job is selection: deciding what is good enough to sell you and what is not.

Where a listing mentions materials or safety standards, that information comes from the manufacturer's own documentation, and we will send you a copy of it if you ask. Where we do not have documentation, we do not make the claim.

No pet toy is indestructible, and no toy replaces supervision. Check toys regularly, and retire any toy once stuffing shows, a seam opens or pieces begin to come away. If you have a dog that dismantles things unusually fast, tell us in an email and we will point you at the sturdier end of the range rather than sell you something that will not last the week.

Found a problem with something you bought?

Email support@vgmhappypets.com with a photo. If a toy failed in a way it should not have, we want to know, and we will refund it and stop selling it.
